We are so excited to welcome Dr. Jonathan Callis as our new head of Upper School!
Jonathan and his wife Amy (née Maugans, WA class of ’03) are returning home to Memphis after spending time across the globe. He attended Rhodes College for his undergraduate degree where he studied English Literature, and he went on to get his PhD from the University of Notre Dame after teaching high school Humanities in Ghana for several years. Most recently, Dr. Callis taught Western Civ and Great Books at Oklahoma Baptist University.
He and Amy have five children: Evangeline (5th grade), Juliet (2nd grade), and triplets James, Joel, and Liam (Kindergarten). Jonathan loves being outdoors, running, biking, and playing ultimate. They are particularly excited to be living close to much of their extended family (grandparents for the win!).

The top three books he would recommend reading are Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, Augustine’s Confessions, and T.S. Eliot’s Collected Poems.
Of Westminster Academy, Dr. Callis says he appreciates that the school “values the Christian formation of their students so highly and seeks to teach them that Truth, Beauty, and Goodness come from the Wisdom of God.” He also says he is ”eager to meet all the students and begin getting to know families and parents too.”
Please extend a warm welcome to Jonathan and his family if you see him around the halls this fall!
