Senior Spotlight – Mackenzie Riggs

Favorite Subject: History with Mr. Kinney

Favorite book read at WA: Lord of the Flies and Screwtape Letters

Favorite WA tradition: Spirit Week because people get to be out of dress code, dress up in fun costumes, and show individuality. The bright colors and crazy apparel people show up in create a fun, joyous atmosphere that doesn’t come out quite the same way at any other point in the year.

Senior Thesis Title: How Fear Affects Freedom in the Church

Brief Description of Senior Thesis: Today freedom means many different things to many different people. Everyone wants to be free from something, whether that be parents, restrictions, laws, cultures, or sin. However, all too often people give up their freedom out of fear. Fear can be an all consuming, raging fire, or a quiet whisper that causes a misstep that leads in the wrong direction. The church has for too long lived in fear of the culture and surrounding circumstances rather than the Lord. Freedom comes from the Lord alone, when we surrender ourselves to His will. Fear the Lord, not man and gain everlasting freedom. No man can destroy the church that rests in God.

College Choice OR How you plan to spend next year? Covenant College

Intended Major or field of work after Westminster: Business

What advice or encouragement would you give to younger students at Westminster? No matter how bad things may get at times, the Lord is always there. He is in the things you do, the things you learn, and the people who help you along. Even when it feels like everyone is against you, He is there. My favorite verse is Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Let that encouragement and that promise carry you through the good and the bad, the evil destruction, the hard rebuilding, and the restful aftermath. He will never leave you nor forsake you.

Please share a funny memory or highlight from your time at Westminster:
My favorite memory would be either Mr. Read getting frustrated with me for overthinking his multiple choice test questions and writing out why I chose what I chose or talking to Mr. Kinney after class for lengthy periods of time about wars, governments, aircraft, movies, books, and mules (with Julia).

Favorite Bible Verse: “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves” (Matthew 10:16).

Prayer Request: I ask for prayers as my family begins a new chapter in homeschooling and as I go off to college. I pray that the Lord would allow this new situation to be a smooth transition and increase our relationships even as we are far apart. I ask for prayers that the Lord will help me stay strong in Him and in His promises to never leave or forsake me.
