This fall, the inaugural Middle School girls soccer team surprised us all, and even themselves, with a 6-7 record, dominating the competition all the way up to the semi-finals in their league tournament. Mr. Daniel Banks took on the role of coach, leading Westminster’s first girls’ soccer team as they took on new opponents across the city.
When tournament time rolled around, the defenders came in as anticipated underdogs against Hutchison, who were the third seed in the league. The determination of the girls triumphed, pulling an upset, which placed them in the semi-finals against St. Francis. Their final game of the season against St. Francis was one of the soccer team’s hardest-fought games. Elizabeth Wilson, the team captain, said “Going into the St. Francis game, we weren’t expecting this to be our last time playing together, and even when we realized it was, we didn’t stop working. The sidelines were filled with energy, cheering us on as we ran the clock down in our final minutes on the field.”
These players, aging from 6th-8th grade, blew their inaugural season out of the water, growing closer as teammates and improving their game. The future of girls’ soccer at Westminster looks bright.
