Wordsmith is an annual writing competition hosted by the University of Memphis English Department. It brings approximately 200 middle and high school students from over 30 Memphis-area schools together to compete in various-length writing dashes.
“Each event tests contestants in descriptive, figurative, narrative, expository, and/or persuasive writing,” explained faculty sponsor Jannica Gregory.
The Westminster seventh graders had a particularly strong showing, receiving the overall first place school trophy. JeJe Warner was honored in every single category, and took the Gold Medal for the grade, and Isabelle Saunders took first place in the 80-word dash.
