Leading up to All Saints’ Day, Mrs. Peckham’s 1st grade class studied the hymn of the month, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God. They looked at the difficult vocabulary words and learned about the structure of the poem. The entire song is an extended metaphor about spiritual warfare, and the class discussed what warfare looks like and how that connects to spiritual warfare. To conclude the discussion, Mrs. Peckham had her students choose a color, a symbol, and an image which represented to them the meaning of the poem. Students chose a variety of colors: red, blue, black, brown, and silver; symbols ranged from crossed swords to a flexed arm; students drew images of battlements, fortresses besieged, and heroes conquering evil. The conclusion? Our God is an ever-present help in time of trouble!
