NEW in 2020: Summer Camp Programs!

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.19.4″]

Westminster Academy offers summer programs for rising JK-12th grade boys and girls from across Memphis. Our mission: to use the summer months to nurture the hearts, minds, and bodies of campers so that they would know the Lord Jesus Christ and worship him with all of their being! Every camp features a devotional time for campers to explore what God says about himself, our world, and how we fit in it. Campers will see God’s truth in action through all sorts of camps: sports, service and stewardship, the arts, and technology. Come join the fun!

Printmaking around the World:

Don’t have time to travel the world this summer? Join us as we explore printmaking, a foundational art technique used in many cultures. We’ll see how fishermen in Japan used gyotaku as part of their businesses. In sub-Saharan Africa, printmaking is used to create mosaic textiles. Dutch artists like Albrecht Durer and Rembrandt used etching as a tool of mass communication, especially to spread the gospel. Campers will explore various print techniques to create their own works of art to bring home. Devotions for the week will center on the printed images of the gospel from classic artists.

Self-Portrait: Fearfully and Wonderfully Made:

The psalmist declared, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14). All creation was created “good,” according to Genesis 1, but the first “very good” creation was mankind, who was made in the very image of God. Campers will explore these texts and bring life to them through a series of self-portraits. A range of artistic techniques will be used, including papier-mâché, collage, drawing, and painting.

Come design, construct, and decorate the sets for the summer musical: Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, Jr. Students will learn the basics of project management as they create a plan, purchase materials based on a budget, determine a realistic timeline, and work as a team to complete the design. Opportunities for servant leadership will abound as students see needs arise. As students work together to accomplish their goal, they will be embodying 1 Corinthians 12, which will form the basis of devotion for the week.

Civil War Battlefield Tour:

As a port city and railroad hub, Memphis was an important target during the Civil War, and important battles were waged for her control. Join American history teacher Kenneth Read and Athletic Director Kenny Shackleford as we explore the battlefields of Shiloh, Ft. Henry, and Ft. Donelson. Campers will hike about 8 miles each day, and two nights will be spent camping near the battlefields. Parents are welcome to join us on this overnight adventure around West Tennessee.

As we explore the battlefields, we’ll also be exploring the men who fought there and the vibrant spiritual life that they had. When they were in the “valley of the shadow of death,” where did they find their comfort (Psalm 23)? When “mortal enemies surround me,” who was the constant source of hope (Psalm 17)? Daily devotionals will explore the heart and hope of the greatest biblical military man, King David.

  • Schedule for the week:
  • Monday, 9:00-12:00: In class lecture and discussion of pre-readings
  • Tuesday, 7:30 a.m.– Wednesday, 3:00 p.m.: overnight camping trip to the Land Between the Lakes (Ft. Henry and Ft. Donelson)
  • Thursday, 7:30 a.m.–Friday, 3:00 p.m.: overnight camping trip to Shiloh and Big Hill Pond
Field Trip Policy

Field trips provide an excellent learning opportunity to see real life applications. They are an integral part of many of Westminster Academy summer camps.

By registering for the camp, parents are giving permission for the child to ride in school-provided transportation. This also authorizes medical treatment to be given to the student in case of injury.

All students must comply with the July 1, 2004 Tennessee Child Restraint Law when attending a field trip. For all ages a seat belt is required for every passenger.

The behavioral standards that apply to campers on campus also apply to participants in field trips.

Memphis Learn & Serve:

When God commanded Adam to subdue the earth in Genesis 1-2, he was giving mankind a mandate to steward all of creation. The first relationships established in the garden were between man and God, man and man, and man and creation. We have a responsibility to each and, in this camp, campers will use the lens of relationship and stewardship to view the needs of their city and their role in serving the city. Using Genesis 1-2 as a starting point, campers will read and study the needs of Memphis, discussing together what Scripture says should be the response of believers.  Campers will see in person how a variety of ministries serve Memphis, visiting ministries like the Humane Society and World Vision. Guest speakers will address campers and share their role in leading others to serve our city. Campers will have the opportunity to examine their own hearts and vocation, to begin asking what ministry role God has called them to. Campers will receive a copy of When Helping Hurts; lunches for the week are included.

ACT Prep:

Westminster Academy students have the highest combined ACT scores of any co-ed school in the Memphis area. Part of that success is due to the ACT prep training of Maylon Jones (algebra and calculus teacher), Mary Read (life science and biology teacher), and Jannica Gregory (English teacher). This team of experts has mined the ACT for its secrets, patterns, and tricks; they are ready to help students discover the best strategies for tackling the test. On the last day of camp, students will take a full practice test and will receive it back graded with individualized materials for further study.

Executive Skills Course:

Are you exhausted or frustrated because you don’t know when to quit working on a project? Do you try to please everyone and succeed at everything? Do you spend most of your time organizing and preparing? Do you forget assignments, lose papers, or miss instructions? Are your parents and teachers constantly asking you questions about your responsibilities, reminding you, or preparing everything for you? Do you feel frustrated, stressed, or out of control?

Wherever you are on the spectrum of life, you need executive function skills.

Executive function skills are the cognitive processes children should develop to self-regulate and become independent learners. Many students need coaching and training to build self-confidence and self-worth as they learn to multi-task, focus, sequence and organize, problem solve, increase processing speed, manage time, etc. MAZResources offers training in executive skills in a fun and active environment. Students will leave each session with concrete skills and resources to begin practicing the day’s topic. Each topic will incorporate listening skills and self-awareness, to meet the ultimate goal of self-reliance in learning.

The schedule:

  • Monday: Time Management: Today’s fun activities teach students how to predict length of time a task will take and create visuals for useful schedules and practical routines.
  • Tuesday: Focus: Today’s fun activities teach students how to sustain attention to lengthy or challenging tasks.
  • Wednesday: Working Memory: Today’s fun activities teach students how to process, store, and manage information through Focus Shifting.
  • Thursday: Flexible Thinking: Today’s fun activities teach students how to choose and use strategies for problem solving.
  • Friday: Project Management: Today’s fun activities teach students tools to initiate tasks and complete non-preferred tasks.

Set Design Camp:

Get out your safety goggles and construction hats!
