On Tuesday, Westminster Academy students were wowed by performances from Mr. James Ryan and Mr. John Eric Brown, two of the teachers in Westminster’s string conservatory. Mr. Ryan is also the director of the string ensembles at the school.
At the Grammar School assembly, Mr. Ryan and Mr. Brown encouraged the students by playing their instruments and pointing them out as a tool to worship God. “By playing our instruments well,” said Mr. Ryan, “we are not only blessing those who are listening, we are also worshiping the Lord by giving him the honor, praise, and glory due to him.”
Mrs. Smith reminded students how mastering an instrument helps point us to one of God’s Standards for our Lives. Colossians 3:23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters. And Mr. Ryan agreed that this is a great lesson that applies to all of life, but which can be especially cultivated when working towards mastering a stringed instrument.
Mr. Brown added that “studying cello, piano, and choir from 1st grade on taught me discipline of body that matched that of martial arts, discipline of mind that matched that of philosophy, and discipline of soul found only in prayer. It was incredibly rewarding to persevere through discouragement and weariness, so that I may now present to God a sacrifice of musical praise.”
Westminster has excellent string teachers who come to the school and work individually with students on the violin, viola, or cello. String lessons are scheduled through Mrs. Smith, and may take place during music class time, recess, or after school, depending on the availability of both the teacher and the student. If a student signs up to take lessons, please know that it is a year-long commitment. This not only helps keep the schedules stable and predictable, but it teaches the students perseverance through the highs and lows they will inevitably encounter as they learn a new and challenging skill. Lessons are open to all ages, JK through 12th grade.
Beyond the individual lessons, we also offer ensembles that students may participate in. Mr. Ryan is the director of the string ensembles, and he is also who determines which ensemble each player is qualified for. Advanced string players have the option of auditioning for the West TN Band and Orchestra Association All West Honor Orchestra. Mrs. Nowlin will provide more information on this activity as it approaches.
